A Ballad Sent To King Richard Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDD ABABBDD ABABBDD E ABABBDD

Sometime this world was so steadfast and stableA
That man's word was held obligationB
And now it is so false and deceivableA
That word and work as in conclusionB
Be nothing one for turned up so downC
Is all this world through meed and wilfulnessD
That all is lost for lack of steadfastnessD
-
What makes this world to be so variableA
But lust that folk have in dissensionB
For now a days a man is held unableA
But if he can by some collusionB
Do his neighbour wrong or oppressionB
What causeth this but wilful wretchednessD
That all is lost for lack of steadfastnessD
-
Truth is put down reason is holden fableA
Virtue hath now no dominationB
Pity exil'd no wight is merciableA
Through covetise is blent discretionB
The worlde hath made permutationB
From right to wrong from truth to ficklenessD
That all is lost for lack of steadfastnessD
-
L'EnvoyE
-
O Prince desire to be honourableA
Cherish thy folk and hate extortionB
Suffer nothing that may be reprovableA
To thine estate done in thy regionB
Show forth the sword of castigationB
Dread God do law love thorough worthinessD
And wed thy folk again to steadfastnessD
