Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEFE GHIHJKLK MNLNOPDP QRSRTUVU

This is the weird of a world old folkA
That not till the last link breaksB
Not till the night is blackestC
The blood of Hengist wakesB
When the sun is black in heavenD
The moon as blood aboveE
And the earth is full of hatredF
This people tells its loveE
-
In change eclipse and perilG
Under the whole world's scornH
By blood and death and darknessI
The Saxon peace is swornH
That all our fruit be gatheredJ
And all our race take handsK
And the sea be a Saxon riverL
That runs through Saxon landsK
-
Lo not in vain we bore himM
Behold it not in vainN
Four centuries' dooms of tortureL
Choked in the throat of SpainN
Ere priest or tyrant triumphO
We know how well we knowP
Bone of that bone can whitenD
Blood of that blood can flowP
-
Deep grows the hate of kindredQ
Its roots take hold on hellR
No peace or praise can heal itS
But a stranger heals it wellR
Seas shall be red as sunsetsT
And kings' bones float as foamU
And heaven be dark with vulturesV
The night our son comes homeU
