When Heaving On The Stormy Waters Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEFD CGHG DIJI KLCL EDED

When heaving on the stormy watersA
I felt my ship beneath to sinkB
I prayed quot Oh Father Satan save meC
Forgive me at death's utter brinkB
-
quot If you will save my soul embitteredD
From perishing before its hourE
The days to come the nights that followF
I vow to vice I pledge to power quotD
-
The Devil forthwith snatched and flung meC
Into a boat the sides were frailG
But on the bench the oars were lyingH
And in the bow an old gray sailG
-
And landward once again I carriedD
My outcast soul bereft of kinI
Upon its sick and vicious sojournJ
My body and its gift of sinI
-
And I am faithful Father SatanK
Unto my evil hour's vowL
When from my drowning ship you saved meC
And when I prayed you guide the prowL
-
To you descend my praises FatherE
No day from bitter blame exemptD
O'er worlds my blasphemy shall towerE
And I shall tempt and I shall temptD
