The Amphora Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDED DFDFGHGH

In a gay jar upon his shoulderA
The slave morosely carries wineB
His road is rough with bog and boulderA
And in the sky no starlights shineB
Into the dark with stabbing glancesC
He peers his careful steps are slowD
Lest on his breast as he advancesE
The staining wine should overflowD
-
I bear my amphora of sorrowD
Long brimming with the wine it hidesF
There poison for each waiting morrowD
Ferments within the painted sidesF
I follow secret ways and hiddenG
To guard the evil vessel lestH
A careless hand should pour unbiddenG
Its bitterness upon my breastH
