Not in the crowd of masqueraders gayA
Where coxcombs' wit with wondrous splendor flaresB
And easier than the Indian's net the preyA
The virtue of young beauties snaresB
-
Not at the toilet table of the fairC
Where vanity as if before an idol bowsD
And often breathes a warmer prayerC
Than when to heaven it pays its vowsD
-
And not behind the curtain's cunning veilE
Where the world's eye is hid by cheating nightF
And glowing flames the hearts assailE
That seemed but chilly in the lightF
-
Where wisdom we surprise with shame dyed lipG
While Phoebus' rays she boldly drinksH
Where men like thievish children nectar sipG
And from the spheres e'en Plato sinksH
-
To ye to ye O lonely sister bandI
Daughters of destiny ascendJ
When o'er the lyre all gently sweeps my handI
These strains where bliss and sadness blendJ
-
You only has no sonnet ever wooedK
To win your gold no usurer e'er sighedL
No coxcomb e'er with plaints your steps pursuedK
For you Arcadian shepherd ne'er has diedL
-
Your gentle fingers ye forever plyM
Life's nervous thread with care to twistN
Till sound the clanging shears and fruitlesslyO
The tender web would then resistN
-
Since thou my thread of life hast kindly spunP
Thy hand O Clotho I now kissQ
Since thou hast spared that life whilst scarce begunP
Receive this nosegay LachesisQ
-
Full often thorns upon the threadR
But oftener roses thou hast strungS
For thorns and roses there outspreadR
Clotho to thee this lay be sungS
-
Oft did tempestuous passions riseQ
And threat to break the thread by forceQ
Oft projects of gigantic sizeQ
Have checked its free unfettered courseQ
-
Oft in sweet hours of heavenly blissQ
Too fine appeared the thread to meO
Still oftener when near sorrow's dark abyssQ
Too firm its fabric seemed to beO
-
Clotho for this and other liesQ
Thy pardon I with tears imploreT
Henceforth I'll take whatever prizeQ
Sage Clotho gives and asks no moreT
-
But never let the shears cut off a roseQ
Only the thorns yet as thou will'stR
Let if thou will'st the death shears sharply closeQ
If thou this single prayer fulfill'stR
-
Oh goddess when enchained to Laura's breathU
My spirit from its shell breaks freeO
Betraying when upon the gates of deathU
My youthful life hangs giddilyO
-
Let to infinity the thread extendR
'Twill wander through the realms of blissQ
Then goddess let thy cruel shears descendR
Then let them fall O LachesisQ
