The Youth By The Brook Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFEFGGGG HIJIKLKL DMDMLNLN

Beside the brook the boy reclinedA
And wove his flowery wreathB
And to the waves the wreath consignedA
The waves that danced beneathB
So fleet mine hours he sighed awayC
Like waves that restless flowD
And so my flowers of youth decayC
Like those that float belowD
-
Ask not why I alone on earthE
Am sad in life's young timeF
To all the rest are hope and mirthE
When spring renews its primeF
Alas the music Nature makesG
In thousand songs of gladnessG
While charming all around me wakesG
My heavy heart to sadnessG
-
Ah vain to me the joys that breakH
From spring voluptuous areI
For only one 't is mine to seekJ
The near yet ever farI
I stretch my arms that shadow shapeK
In fond embrace to holdL
Still doth the shade the clasp escapeK
The heart is unconsoledL
-
Come forth fair friend come forth belowD
And leave thy lofty hallM
The fairest flowers the spring can knowD
In thy dear lap shall fallM
Clear glides the brook in silver rolledL
Sweet carols fill the airN
The meanest hut hath space to holdL
A happy loving pairN
