The foaming stream from out the rock	A
With thunder roar begins to rush	B
The oak falls prostrate at the shock	A
And mountain wrecks attend the gush	B
With rapturous awe in wonder lost	C
The wanderer hearkens to the sound	D
From cliff to cliff he hears it tossed	C
Yet knows not whither it is bound	D
'Tis thus that song's bright waters pour	E
From sources never known before	E

In union with those dreaded ones	F
That spin life's thread all silently	G
Who can resist the singer's tones	H
Who from his magic set him free	G
With wand like that the gods bestow	I
He guides the heaving bosom's chords	J
He steeps it in the realms below	I
He bears it wondering heavenward	I
And rocks it 'twixt the grave and gay	K
On feeling's scales that trembling sway	K

As when before the startled eyes	L
Of some glad throng mysteriously	G
With giant step in spirit guise	L
Appears a wondrous deity	G
Then bows each greatness of the earth	M
Before the stranger heaven born	N
Mute are the thoughtless sounds of mirth	M
While from each face the mask is torn	N
And from the truth's triumphant might	I
Each work of falsehood takes to flight	I

So from each idle burden free	G
When summoned by the voice of song	O
Man soars to spirit dignity	G
Receiving force divinely strong	O
Among the gods is now his home	P
Naught earthly ventures to approach	Q
All other powers must now be dumb	R
No fate can on his realms encroach	Q
Care's gloomy wrinkles disappear	S
Whilst music's charms still linger here	T

As after long and hopeless yearning	U
And separation's bitter smart	I
A child with tears repentant burning	U
Clings fondly to his mother's heart	I
So to his youthful happy dwelling	U
To rapture pure and free from stain	V
All strange and false conceits expelling	U
Song guides the wanderer back again	W
In faithful Nature's loving arm	X
From chilling precepts to grow warm	Y
