The clouds fast gatherA
The forest oaks roarB
A maiden is sittingC
Beside the green shoreB
The billows are breaking with might with mightD
And she sighs aloud in the darkling nightD
Her eyelid heavy with weepingC
-
My heart's dead within meE
The world is a voidF
To the wish it gives nothingC
Each hope is destroyedF
I have tasted the fulness of bliss belowG
I have lived I have loved Thy child oh take nowH
Thou Holy One into Thy keepingC
-
In vain is thy sorrowG
In vain thy tears fallI
For the dead from their slumbersJ
They ne'er can recallI
Yet if aught can pour comfort and balm in thy heartK
Now that love its sweet pleasures no more can impartK
Speak thy wish and thou granted shalt find itL
-
Though in vain is my sorrowG
Though in vain my tears fallI
Though the dead from their slumbersJ
They ne'er can recallI
Yet no balm is so sweet to the desolate heartK
When love its soft pleasures no more can impartK
As the torments that love leaves behind itL
