Hear I the creaking gate uncloseA
The gleaming latch upliftedB
No 'twas the wind that whirring roseA
Amidst the poplars driftedC
Adorn thyself thou green leaf bowering roofD
Destined the bright one's presence to receiveE
For her a shadowy palace hall aloofD
With holy night thy boughs familiar weaveE
And ye sweet flatteries of the delicate airF
Awake and sport her rosy cheek aroundG
When their light weight the tender feet shall bearF
When beauty comes to passion's trysting groundG
-
Hush what amidst the copses creptH
So swiftly by me nowI
No 'twas the startled bird that sweptH
The light leaves of the boughI
Day quench thy torch come ghostlike from on highJ
With thy loved silence come thou haunting EveE
Broaden below thy web of purple dyeJ
Which lulled boughs mysterious round us weaveE
For love's delight enduring listeners noneK
The froward witness of the light will fleeL
Hesper alone the rosy silent oneK
Down glancing may our sweet familiar beL
-
What murmur in the distance spokeM
And like a whisper diedN
No 'twas the swan that gently brokeM
In rings the silver tideN
Soft to my ear there comes a music flowO
In gleesome murmur glides the waterfallP
To zephyr's kiss the flowers are bending lowO
Through life goes joy exchanging joy with allP
Tempt to the touch the grapes the blushing fruitQ
Voluptuous swelling from the leaves that bideN
And drinking fever from my cheek the muteQ
Air sleeps all liquid in the odor tideN
-
Hark through the alley hear I nowI
A footfall Comes the maidenK
No 'twas the fruit slid from the boughI
With its own richness ladenK
-
Day's lustrous eyes grow heavy in sweet deathR
And pale and paler wane his jocund huesA
The flowers too gentle for his glowing breathR
Ope their frank beauty to the twilight dewsA
The bright face of the moon is still and loneS
Melts in vast masses the world silentlyL
Slides from each charm the slowly loosening zoneS
And round all beauty veilless roves the eyeJ
-
What yonder seems to glimmerT
Her white robe's glancing huesA
No 'twas the column's shimmerT
Athwart the darksome yewsA
-
O longing heart no more delight upbuoyedN
Let the sweet airy image thee befoolL
The arms that would embrace her clasp the voidN
This feverish breast no phantom bliss can coolL
O waft her here the true the living oneK
Let but my hand her hand the tender feelL
The very shadow of her robe aloneS
So into life the idle dream shall stealL
-
As glide from heaven when least we weenS
The rosy hours of blissA
All gently came the maid unseenS
He waked beneath her kissA
