How gracefully O man with thy palm boughA
Upon the waning century standest thouA
In proud and noble manhood's primeB
With unlocked senses with a spirit freedC
Of firmness mild though silent rich in deedC
The ripest son of TimeB
Through meekness great through precepts strongD
Through treasures rich that time had longD
Hid in thy bosom and through reason freeE
Master of Nature who thy fetters lovesF
And who thy strength in thousand conflicts provesG
And from the desert soared in pride with theeE
-
Flushed with the glow of victoryE
Never forget to prize the handH
That found the weeping orphan childI
Deserted on life's barren strandH
And left a prey to hazard wildI
That ere thy spirit honor saw the dayJ
Thy youthful heart watched over silentlyE
And from thy tender bosom turned awayJ
Each thought that might have stained its purityE
That kind one ne'er forget who as in sportK
Thy youth to noble aspirations trainedL
And who to thee in easy riddles taughtM
The secret how each virtue might be gainedL
Who to receive him back more perfect stillN
E'en into strangers' arms her favorite gaveO
Oh may'st thou never with degenerate willN
Humble thyself to be her abject slaveO
In industry the bee the palm may bearP
In skill the worm a lesson may impartQ
With spirits blest thy knowledge thou dost shareP
But thou O man alone hast artQ
-
Only through beauty's morning gateR
Didst thou the land of knowledge findS
To merit a more glorious fateR
In graces trains itself the mindS
What thrilled thee through with trembling blessedT
When erst the Muses swept the chordU
That power created in thy breastT
Which to the mighty spirit soaredU
-
When first was seen by doting reason's kenV
When many a thousand years had passed awayJ
A symbol of the fair and great e'en thenV
Before the childlike mind uncovered layJ
Its blessed form bade us honor virtue's causeW
The honest sense 'gainst vice put forth its powersX
Before a Solon had devised the lawsY
That slowly bring to light their languid flowersX
Before Eternity's vast schemeZ
Was to the thinker's mind revealedA2
Was't not foreshadowed in his dreamZ
Whose eyes explored yon starry fieldA2
-
Urania the majestic dreaded oneB2
Who wears a glory of Orions twinedS
Around her brow and who is seen by noneB2
Save purest spirits when in splendor shrinedS
She soars above the stars in prideS
Ascending to her sunny throneC2
Her fiery chaplet lays asideS
And now as beauty stands aloneC2
While with the Graces' girdle round her castS
She seems a child by children understoodS
For we shall recognize as truth at lastS
What here as beauty only we have viewedS
-
When the Creator banished from his sightS
Frail man to dark mortality's abodeS
And granted him a late return to lightS
Only by treading reason's arduous roadS
When each immortal turned his face awayJ
She the compassionate aloneC2
Took up her dwelling in that house of clayJ
With the deserted banished oneB2
With drooping wing she hovers hereD2
Around her darling near the senses' landS
And on his prison walls so drearD2
Elysium paints with fond deceptive handS
-
While soft humanity still lay at restS
Within her tender arms extendedS
No flame was stirred by bigots' murderous zestS
No guiltless blood on high ascendedS
The heart that she in gentle fetters bindsE2
Views duty's slavish escort scornfullyJ
Her path of light though fairer far it windsF2
Sinks in the sun track of moralityS
Those who in her chaste service still remainG2
No grovelling thought can tempt no fate affrightS
The spiritual life so free from stainG2
Freedom's sweet birthright they receive againV
Under the mystic sway of holy mightS
-
The purest among millions happy theyJ
Whom to her service she has sanctifiedS
Whose mouths the mighty one's commands conveyJ
Within whose breasts she deigneth to abideS
Whom she ordained to feed her holy fireD2
Upon her altar's ever flaming pyreD2
Whose eyes alone her unveiled graces meetS
And whom she gathers round in union sweetS
In the much honored place be gladS
Where noble order bade ye climbB
For in the spirit world sublimeB
Man's loftiest rank ye've ever hadS
-
Ere to the world proportion ye revealedS
That every being joyfully obeysH2
A boundless structure in night's veil concealedS
Illumed by naught but faint and languid raysH2
A band of phantoms struggling ceaselesslyS
Holding his mind in slavish fetters boundS
Unsociable and rude as beS
Assailing him on every side aroundS
Thus seemed to man creation in that dayJ
United to surrounding forms aloneC2
By the blind chains the passions had put onI2
Whilst Nature's beauteous spirit fled awayJ
Unfelt untasted and unknownC2
-
And as it hovered o'er with parting rayJ
Ye seized the shades so neighborlyS
With silent hand with feeling mindS
And taught how they might be combinedS
In one firm bond of harmonyS
The gaze light soaring felt uplifted thenV
When first the cedar's slender trunk it viewedS
And pleasingly the ocean's crystal floodS
Reflected back the dancing form againV
Could ye mistake the look with beauty fraughtS
That Nature gave to help ye on your wayJ
The image floating on the billows taughtS
The art the fleeting shadow to portrayJ
-
From her own being torn apartS
Her phantom beauteous as a dreamZ
She plunged into the silvery streamZ
Surrendering to her spoiler's artS
Creative power soon in your breast unfoldedS
Too noble far not idly to conceiveJ2
The shadow's form in sand in clay ye mouldedS
And made it in the sketch its being leaveJ2
The longing thirst for action then awokeK2
And from your breast the first creation brokeK2
-
By contemplation captive madeS
Ensnared by your discerning eyeL2
The friendly phantom's soon betrayedS
The talisman that roused your ecstasyS
The laws of wonder working mightS
The stores by beauty brought to lightS
Inventive reason in soft union plannedS
To blend together 'neath your forming handS
The obelisk the pyramid ascendedS
The Hermes stood the column sprang on highL2
The reed poured forth the woodland melodyS
Immortal song on victor's deeds attendedS
-
The fairest flowers that decked the earthM2
Into a nosegay with wise choice combinedS
Thus the first art from Nature had its birthM2
Into a garland then were nosegays twinedS
And from the works that mortal hands had madeS
A second nobler art was now displayedS
The child of beauty self sufficient nowA
That issued from your hands to perfect dayS
Loses the chaplet that adorned its browA
Soon as reality asserts its swayS
The column yielding to proportion's chainsN2
Must with its sisters join in friendly linkO2
The hero in the hero band must sinkO2
The Muses' harp peals forth its tuneful strainsN2
-
The wondering savages soon cameP2
To view the new creation's planQ2
Behold the joyous crowds exclaimP2
Behold all this is done by manQ2
With jocund and more social aimP2
The minstrel's lyre their awe awokeK2
Telling of Titans and of giant's fraysN2
And lion slayers turning as he spokeK2
Even into heroes those who heard his laysN2
For the first time the soul feels joyR2
By raptures blessed that calmer areD2
That only greet it from afarD2
That passions wild can ne'er destroyR2
And that when tasted do not cloyR2
-
And now the spirit free and fairD2
Awoke from out its sensual sleepS2
By you unchained the slave of careD2
Into the arms of joy could leapS2
Each brutish barrier soon was set at naughtS
Humanity first graced the cloudless browA
And the majestic noble stranger thoughtS
From out the wondering brain sprang boldly nowA
Man in his glory stood uprightS
And showed the stars his kingly faceN2
His speaking glance the sun's bright lightS
Blessed in the realms sublime of spaceN2
Upon the cheek now bloomed the smileJ
The voice's soulful harmonyS
Expanded into song the whileJ
And feeling swam in the moiT2
