Wilt thou not the lambkins guardA
Oh how soft and meek they lookB
Feeding on the grassy swardC
Sporting round the silvery brookB
Mother mother let me goD
On yon heights to chase the roeD

With the horn's inspiring notesF
Sweet the echo of yon bellE
As across the wood it floatsF

Smiling gently in their bedH
For no garden thou wilt findG
On yon heights so wild and dreadH
Leave the flow'rets let them blowD

Onward pressed with headlong speedJ
To the mountain's gloomiest placeI
Naught his progress could impedeJ
And before him like the windG
Swiftly flies the trembling hindG

Clambers she with footsteps lightL
O'er the chasm's dark abyssM
Leaps with spring of daring mightL
But behind unweariedlyD
With his death bow follows heN

And the path is lost to sightL
There she views the steeps belowD
Close behind her mortal foeD

Seeks the cruel boy to moveQ

To the string he fits the grooveQ
When from out the clefts beholdR
Steps the Mountain Genius oldR
