SCENE IF
-
JUNO Descending from her chariot enveloped in a cloudG
Away ye peacocks with my winged carH
Upon Cithaeron's cloud capped summit waitI
The chariot and cloud vanishJ
Hail hail thou house of my undying angerD
A fearful hail to thee thou hostile roofK
Ye hated walls This this then is the placeL
Where Jupiter pollutes his marriage bedM
Even before the face of modest dayA
'Tis here then that a woman a frail mortalN
A dust created being dares to lureO
The mighty Thunderer from out mine armsP
And hold him prisoner against her lipsQ
-
Juno Juno thought of madnessR
Thou all lonely and in sadnessR
Standest now on heaven's bright throneS
Though the votive smoke ascendethT
Though each knee in homage bendethT
What are they when love has flownS
-
To humble alas each too haughty emotionU
That swelled my proud breast from the foam of the oceanU
Fair Venus arose to enchant gods and menV
And the Fates my still deeper abasement decreeingW
Her offspring Hermione brought into beingW
And the bliss once mine own can ne'er glad me againV
-
Amongst the gods do I not reign the queenX
Am I not sister of the ThundererO
Am I not wife of Zeus the lord of allY
Groans not the mighty axis of the heavensZ
At my command Gleams not Olympus' crownA2
Upon my head Ha now I feel myselfB2
In my immortal veins is Kronos' bloodC2
Right royally now swells my godlike heartD2
Revenge revengeE2
Shall she unpunished ridicule my mightF2
Unpunished discord roll amongst the godsG2
Inviting Eris to invade the courtsH2
The joyous courts of heaven Vain thoughtless oneU
Perish and learn upon the Stygian streamI2
The difference 'twixt divine and earthly dustJ2
The giant armor may it weigh thee downA2
Thy passion for a god to atoms crush theeT
Armed with revenge as with a coat of mailK2
I have descended from Olympus' heightsL2
Devising sweet ensnaring flattering wordsM2
But in those words death and destruction lurkW
Hark 'tis her footstep she approaches nowN2
Approaches ruin and a certain deathT
Veil thyself goddess in a mortal form ExitO2
-
SEMELE Calling behind the scenesP2
The sun is fast declining Maidens hasteQ2
Scatter ambrosial fragrance through the hallY
Strew roses and narcissus flowers aroundR2
Forgetting not the gold embroidered pillowB
He comes not yet the sun is fast decliningW
-
JUNO hastily entering in the form of an old womanU
Praised be the deities my dearest daughterO
-
SEMELET
Ha Do I dream Am I awake Gods BeroeO
-
JUNOB
Is't possible that Semele can e'erO
Forget her nurseS2
-
SEMELE 'Tis Beroe By ZeusT2
Oh let thy daughter clasp thee to her heartD2
Thou livest still What can have brought thee hereO
From Epidaurus Tell me all thy taleK2
Thou art my mother as of oldU2
-
JUNO Thy motherO
Time was thou call'dst me soB
-
SEMELE Thou art so stillV2
And wilt remain so till I drink full deepW2
Of Lethe's maddening draughtX2
JUNO Soon BeroeO
Will drink oblivion from the waves of LetheT
But Cadmus' daughter ne'er will taste that draughtX2
-
SEMELET
How my good nurse Thy language ne'er was wontY2
To be mysterious or of hidden meaningW
The spirit of gray hairs 'tis speaks in theeT
Thou sayest I ne'er shall taste of Lethe's draughtX2
-
JUNOB
I said so yes But wherefore ridiculeZ2
Gray hairs 'Tis true that they unlike fair tressesA3
Have ne'er been able to ensnare a godB3
-
SEMELET
Pardon poor thoughtless me What cause have IF
To ridicule gray hairs Can I supposeC3
That mine forever fair will grace my neckW
But what was that I heard thee mutteringW
Between thy teeth A godB3
-
JUNO Said I a godB3
The deities in truth dwell everywhereO
'Tis good for earth's frail children to implore themD3
The gods are found where thou art SemeleT
What wouldst thou askW
-
SEMELE Malicious heart But sayA
What brings thee to this spot from EpidaurusA
'Tis not because the gods delight to dwellE3
near SemeleT
-
JUNO By Jupiter naught elseA
What fire was that which mounted to thy cheeksA
When I pronounced the name of JupiterO
Naught else my daughter Fearfully the plagueW
At Epidaurus rages every blastF3
Is deadly poison every breath destroysA
The son his mother burns his bride the bridegroomG3
The funeral piles rear up their flaming headsA
Converting even midnight to bright dayA
While howls of anguish ceaseless rend the airO
Full to overflowing is the cup of woeB
In anger Zeus looks down on our poor nationU
In vain the victim's blood is shed in vainH3
Before the altar bows the priest his kneeT
Deaf is his ear to all our supplicationsA
Therefore my sorrow stricken country nowN2
Has sent me here to Cadmus' regal daughterO
In hopes that I may move her to avertI3
His anger from us Beroe the nurseA
Has influence thus they said with SemeleT
And Semele with Zeus I know no moreO
And understand still less what means the sayingW
That Semele such influence has with ZeusA
-
SEMELE Eagerly and thoughtlesslyT
The plague shall cease to morrow Tell them soA
Zeus loves me Say so It shall cease to dayA
-
JUNO Starting up in astonishmentJ3
Ha Is it true what fame with thousand tonguesA
Has spread abroad from Ida to Mount HaemusA
Zeus loves thee Zeus salutes thee in the gloryT
Wherein the denizens of heaven regard himK3
When in Saturnia's arms he sinks to restL3
Let O ye gods my gray hairs now descendM3
To Orcus' shades for I have lived enoughN3
In godlike splendor Kronos' mighty sonU
Comes down to her to her who on this breastL3
Once suckled yes to herO
-
SEMELE Oh BeroeO
In youthful form he came in lovelier guiseA
Than they who from Aurora's lap ariseA
Fairer than Hesper breathing incense dimK3
In floods of ether steeped appeared each limbK3
He moved with graceful and majestic motionU
Like silvery billows heaving o'er the oceanU
Or as Hyperion whose bright shoulders everO
His bow and arrow bear and clanging quiverO
His robe of light behind him gracefullyT
Danced in the breeze his voice breathed melodyT
Like crystal streams with silvery murmur fallingW
More ravishing than Orpheus' strains enthrallingW
-
JUNOA
My daughter Inspiration spurs thee onO3
Raising thy heart to flights of HeliconO3
If thus in strains of Delphic ecstasyT
Ascends the short lived blissful memoryT
Of his bright charms Oh how divine must beT
His own sweet voice his look how heavenlyT
But why of that great attributeP3
Kronion joys in most be muteP3
The majesty that hurls the thunderO
And tears the fleeting clouds asunderO
Wilt thou say naught of that aloneS
Prometheus and DeucalionS
May lend the fairest charms of loveQ3
But none can wield the bolt save JoveQ3
The thunderbolt it is aloneS
Which he before thy feet laid downS
That proves thy right to beauty's crownS
-
SEMELET
What sayest thou What are thunder bolts to meT
-
JUNO SmilingW
Ah Semele A jest becomes thee wellT
-
SEMELET
Deucalion has no offspring so divineS
As is my Zeus of thunder naught I knowS
-
JUNOS
Mere envy FieQ3
-
SEMELE No Beroe By ZeusA
-
JUNOS
Thou swearestP3
-
SEMELE By Zeus by mine own ZeusA
-
JUNO Shrieking Thou swearestP3
Unhappy oneS
-
SEMELE In alarm What meanest thou BeroeO
-
JUNOS
Repeat the word that dooms thee to becomeR3
the wretchedest of all on earth's wide faceA
Alas lost creature 'Twas not ZeusA
-
SEMELE Not ZeusA
Oh fearful thoughtP3
-
JUNO A cunning traitor 'twasA
From Attica who 'neath a godlike formS3
Robbed thee of honor shame and innocenceA
SEMELE sinks to the groundP3
Well mayest thou fall Ne'er mayest thou rise againS
May endless night enshroud thine eyes in darknessA
May endless silence round thine ears encampT3
Remain forever here a lifeless massA
Oh infamy Enough to hurl chaste dayP3
Back into Hecate's gloomy arms once moreO
Ye gods And is it thus that BeroeO
Finds Cadmus' daughter after sixteen yearsA
Of bitter separation Full of joyU3
I came from Epidaurus but with shameV3
To Epidaurus must retrace my stepsA
Despair I take with me Alas my peopleT
E'en to the second Deluge now the plagueW
May rage at will may pile mount Oeta highQ3
With corpses upon corpses and may turnS
All Greece into one mighty charnel houseA
Ere Semele can bend the angry godsA
I thou and Greece and all have been betrayedP3
-
SEMELE Trembling as she rises and extending an arm towards herO
Oh BeroeO
-
JUNO Take courage my dear heartP3
Perchance 'tis Zeus although it scarce can beT
Perchance 'tis really Zeus This we must learnS
He must disclose himself to thee or thouN2
Must fly his sight forever and devoteP3
The monster to the death revenge of ThebesA
Look up dear daughter look upon the faceA
Of thine own Beroe who looks on theeT
With sympathizing eyes my SemeleT
Were it not well to try himK3
-
SEMELE No by heavenS
I should not find him thenS
-
JUNO What Wilt thou beT
Perchance less wretched if thou pinest onS
In mournful doubt and if 'tis really heT
-
SEMELE Hiding her face in Juno's lapW3
Ah 'tis not heT
-
JUNO And if he came to theeT
Arrayed in all the majesty whereinS
Olympus sees him Semele What thenS
Wouldst thou repent thee then of having tried himK3
-
SEMELE Springing upX3
Ha be it so He must unveil himselfQ3
-
JUNO HastilyT
Thou must not let him sink into thine armsA
Till he unveils himself so hearken childP3
To what thy faithful nurse now counsels theeT
To what affection whispers in mine earO
And will accomplish Say will he soon comeR3
-
SEMELET
Before Hyperion sinks in Thetis' bedP3
He promised to appearO
-
JUNO Forgetting herself hastily Is't so indeedP3
He promised Ha To day Recovering herself Let him approachY3
And when he would attempt inflamed with loveQ3
To clasp his arms around thee then do thouN2
Observe me well as if by lightning struckW
Start back in haste Ha picture his surpriseA
Leave him not long in wonderment my childP3
Continue to repulse him with a lookW
As cold as ice more wildly with more ardorO
He'll press thee then the coyness of the fairO
Is but a dam that for awhile keeps backW
The torrent only to increase the floodP3
With greater fury Then begin to weepW2
'Gainst giants he might stand look calmly onS
When Typheus hundred armed in fury hurledP3
Mount Ossa and Olympus 'gainst his throneS
But Zeus is soon subdued by beauty's tearsA
Thou smilest Be it so Is then the scholarO
Wiser perchance than she who teaches herO
Then thou must pray the god one little littleT
Most innocent request to grant to theeT
One that may seal his love and godhead tooP3
He'll swear by Styx The Styx he must obeyP3
That oath he dares not break Then speak these wordsA
Thou shalt not touch this body till thou comestP3
To Cadmus' daughter clothed in all the mightP3
Wherein thou art embraced by Kronos' daughterO
Be not thou terrified my SemeleT
If he in order to escape thy wishJ
As bugbears paints the horrors of his presenceA
Describes the flames that round about him roarO
The thunder round him rolling when he comesA
These Semele are naught but empty fearsA
The gods dislike to show to us frail mortalsA
These the most glorious of their attributesA
Be thou but obstinate in thy requestP3
And Juno's self will gaze on thee with envyT
-
SEMELET
The frightful ox eyed one How often heT
Complains in the blest moments of our loveQ3
Of her tormenting him with her black gallT
-
JUNO Aside furiously but with embarrassmentP3
Ha creature Thou shalt die for this contemptP3
-
SEMELET
My Beroe What art thou murmuring thereO
-
JUNO In confusionS
Nothing my Semele Black gall tormentsA
Me also Yes a sharp reproachful lookW
With lovers often passes as black gallT
Yet ox eyes after all are not so uglyT
-
SEMELET
Oh Beroe for shame they're quite the worstP3
That any head can possibly containS
And then her cheeks of green and yellow huesA
The obvious penalty of poisonous envyT
Zeus oft complains to me that that same shrewO
Each night torments him with her nauseous loveQ3
And with her jealous whims enough I'm sureO
Into Ixion's wheel to turn all heavenS
-
JUNO Raving up and down in extreme confusionS
No more of thisA
-
SEMELE What Beroe So angryO
Have I said more than what is true Said moreO
Than what is wiseA
-
JUNO Thou hast said more young womanS
Than what is true said more than what is wiseA
Deem thyself truly blest if thy blue eyesA
Smile thee not into Charon's bark too soonS
Saturnia has her altars and her templesA
And wanders amongst mortals that great goddessA
Avenges naught so bitterly as scornS
-
SEMELEO
Here let her wander and give birth to scornS
What is't to me My Jupiter protectsA
My every hair what harm can Juno doP3
But now enough of this my BeroeO
Zeus must appear to day in all his gloryO
And if Saturnia should on that accountP3
Find out the path to OrcusA
-
JUNO Aside That same pathT
Another probably will find before herO
If but Kronion's lightning hits the markW
To SemeleO
Yes Semele she well may burst with envyO
When Cadmus' daughter in the sight of GreeceA
Ascends in triumph to Olympus' heightsA
-
SEMELE Smiling gentlyO
Thinkest thou they'll hear in Greece of Cadmus' daughterO
-
JUNO From Sidon to Athens the trumpet of fameV3
Shall ring with no other but Semele's nameV3
The gods from the heavens shall even descendP3
And before thee their knees in deep homage shall bendP3
While mortals in silent submission abideP3
The will of the giant destroyer's loved brideP3
And when distant years shall seeO
Thy last hourO
-
SEMELE Springing up and falling on her neckW
Oh BeroeO
-
JUNO Then a tablet white shall bearO
This inscription graven thereO
Here is worshipped SemeleO
Who on earth so fair as sheO
She who from Olympus' throneS
Lured the thunder hurler downS
She who with her kisses sweetP3
Laid him prostrate at her feetP3
And when fame on her thousand wings bears it aroundP3
The echo from valley and hill shall resoundP3
-
SEMELE Beside herselfQ3
Pythia Apollo HearO
When oh when will he appearO
-
JUNO And on smoking altars theyP3
Rites divine to thee shall payP3
-
SEMELE InspiredP3
I will harken to their prayerO
And will drive away their careO
Quench with my tears the lightning of great JoveQ3
His breast to pity with entreaty moveQ3
-
JUNO AsideP3
Poor thing that wilt thou ne'er have power to do MeditatingW
Ere long will melt yet yet she called me uglyO
No pity only when in TartarusO
To SemeleO
Fly now my love Make haste to leave this spotP3
That Zeus may not observe thee Let him waitP3
Long for thy coming that he with more fireO
May languish for theeO
-
SEMELE Beroe The heavensO
Have chosen thee their mouthpiece Happy IQ3
The gods from Olympus shall even descendP3
And before me their knees in deep homage shall bendP3
While mortals in silent submission abideP3
But hold 'tis time for me to haste awayP3
Exit hurriedlyO
-
JUNO Looking after her with exultationS
Weak proud and easily deluded womanS
His tender looks shall be consuming fireO
His kiss annihilation his embraceO
A raging tempest to thee Human framesO
Are powerless to endure the dreaded presenceO
Of him who wields the thunderbolt on highQ3
With raving ecstasyO
Ha when her waxen mortal body meltsO
Within the arms of him the fire distillingW
As melts the fleecy snow before the heatP3
Of the bright sun and when the perjured oneS
In place of his soft tender bride embracesO
A form of terror with what ecstasyO
Shall I gaze downwards from Cithaeron's heightP3
Exclaiming so that in his hand the boltP3
Shall quake For shame Saturnius Fie for shameV3
What need is there for thee to clasp so roughlyO
Exit hastilyO

ZEUS Up Hasten TurnS
Thy pinions' flight toward far Scamander's bankW
A shepherd there is weeping o'er the graveQ3

MERCURY RisingW
Let but thy head a nod almighty giveQ3
And in an instant I am there am backW
In the same instantP3
-
ZEUS Stay As I o'er ArgosO
Was flying from my temples curling roseO
The sacrificial smoke it gave me joyU3
That thus the people worship me so flyO
To Ceres to my sister thus speaks ZeusO
Ten thousandfold for fifty years to comeR3
Let her reward the Argive husbandmenS
-
MERCURYO
With trembling haste I execute thy wrathT
With joyous speed thy messages of graceO
Father of all For to the deitiesO
'Tis bliss to make man happy to destroy himK3
Is anguish to the gods Thy will be doneS
Where shall I pour into thine ears their thanksO
Below in dust or at thy throne on highO
-
ZEUSO
Here at my throne on earth within the palaceO
Of Semele Away Exit MercuryO
Does she not comeR3
As is her wont Olympus' mighty kingW
To clasp against her rapture swelling breastP3
Why hastens not my Semele to meet meO
A vacant deathlike fearful silence reignsO
On every side around the lonely palaceO
So wont to ring with wild bacchantic shoutsO
No breath is stirring on Cithaeron's heightP3
Exulting Juno stands Will SemeleO
Never again make haste to meet her ZeusO
A pause after which he continuesO
Ha Can yon impious one perchance have daredP3
To set her foot in my love's sanctuaryO
Saturnia Mount Cithaeron her rejoicingsO
Fearful foreboding Semele yet peaceO
Take courage I'm thy Zeus the scattered heavensO
Shall learn my Semele that I'm thy ZeusO
Where is the breath of air that dares presumeG3
Roughly to blow on her whom Zeus calls HisO
I scoff at all her malice Where art thouN2
O Semele I long have pined to restP3
My world tormented head upon thy breastP3
To lull my wearied senses to reposeO
From the wild storm of earthly joys and woesO
To dream away the emblems of my mightP3
My reins my tiller and my chariot brightP3
And live for naught beyond the joys of loveQ3
Oh heavenly inspiration that can moveQ3
Even the Gods divine What is the bloodP3
Of mighty Uranus what all the floodP3
Of nectar and ambrosia what the throneS
Of high Olympus what the power I ownS
The golden sceptre of the starry skiesO
What the omnipotence that never diesO
What might eternal immortalityO
What e'en a god oh love if reft of theeO
The shepherd who beside the murmuring brooksO
Leans on his true love's breast nor cares to lookW
After his straying lambs in that sweet hourO
Envies me not my thunderbolt of powerO
She comes she hastens nigh Pearl of my worksO
Woman the artist who created theeO
Should be adored 'Twas I myself I worshipX3
Zeus worships Zeus for Zeus created theeO
Ha Who will now in all the being realmA4
Condemn me How unseen yes how despisedP3
Dwindle away my worlds my constellationsO
So ray diffusing all my dancing systemsO
What wise men call the music of my spheresO
How dead are all when weighed against a soulO
Semele approaches without looking upX3
My pride my throne on earth Oh SemeleO
He rushes towards her she seeks to flyO
Thou flyest art mute Ha Semele thou flyestP3

SEMELE Repulsing himK3

What not an answer Eagerly mine armsO

Shall burst their bonds when I order it soO
And kiss the valleys and plains belowO
And dance in the breeze like flakes of snowO
Command and the winds from the east and the northT
And the fierce tornado shall sally forthT
While Poseidon's trident their power shall ownS
When they shake to its base his watery throneS
The billows in angry fury shall riseO
And every sea mark and dam despiseO
The lightning shall gleam through the firmament blackW
While the poles of earth and of heaven shall crackW
The ocean the heights of Olympus exploreO
From thousandfold jaws with wild deafening roarO
The thunder shall howl while with mad jubileeO
The hurricane fierce sings in triumph to theeO

SEMELEO
These are but empty terrors Zeus In truthT
I do not dread thy threatsO
ZEUS Deluded childP3
Go take a last farewell forever moreO
Of all thy friends beloved naught naught has powerO
To save thee Semele I am thy ZeusO
Yet that no more GoS
-
SEMELE Jealous one the StyxO
Think not that thou'lt be able to escape me ExitP3
-
ZEUSO
No Juno shall not triumph She shall trembleO
Aye and by virtue of the deadly mightP3
That makes the earth and makes the heavens my footstoolO
Upon the sharpest rock in Thracia's landP3
With adamantine chains I'll bind her fastP3
But oh this oathT
Mercury appears in the distanceO
What means thy hasty flightP3
-
MERCURYO
I bring the fiery winged and weeping thanksO
Of those whom thou hast blessedP3
-
ZEUS Again destroy themD3
-
MERCURY In amazementP3
ZeusO
-
ZEUS None shall now be blessed She diesO
The curtain fallsO
