What wonder this we ask the lympid wellA
O earth of thee and from thy solemn wombB
What yieldest thou is there life in the abyssC
Doth a new race beneath the lava dwellA
Returns the past awakening from the tombB
Rome Greece Oh come Behold behold for thisC
Our living world the old Pompeii seesD
And built anew the town of Dorian HerculesD
House upon house its silent halls once moreE
Opes the broad portico Oh haste and fillF
Again those halls with life Oh pour alongG
Through the seven vista'd theatre the throngG
Where are ye mimes Come forth the steel prepareH
For crowned Atrides or Orestes hauntI
Ye choral Furies with your dismal chantJ
The arch of triumph whither leads it stillF
Behold the forum on the curule chairH
Where the majestic image Lictors whereH
Your solemn fasces Place upon his throneK
The Praetor here the witness lead and thereH
Bid the accuser standL
-
O God how loneK
The clear streets glitter in the quiet dayM
The footpath by the doors winding its lifeless wayM
The roofs arise in shelter and aroundN
The desolate Atrium every gentle roomB
Wears still the dear familiar smile of homeO
Open the doors the shops on dreary nightP
Let lusty day laugh down in jocund lightP
-
See the trim benches ranged in order SeeQ
The marble tesselated floor and thereH
The very walls are glittering livinglyF
With their clear colors But the artist whereH
Sure but this instant he hath laid asideR
Pencil and colors Glittering on the eyeS
Swell the rich fruits and bloom the flowers See allF
Art's gentle wreaths still fresh upon the wallF
Here the arch Cupid slyly seems to glideR
By with bloom laden basket There the shapesT
Of genii press with purpling feet the grapesT
Here springs the wild Bacchante to the danceU
And there she sleeps while that voluptuous tranceU
Eyes the sly faun with never sated glanceU
Now on one knee upon the centaur steedsV
Hovering the Thyrsus plies Hurrah away she speedsV
-
Come come why loiter ye Here here how fairH
The goodly vessels still Girls hither turnW
Fill from the fountain the Etruscan urnW
On the winged sphinxes see the tripod HoX
Quick quick ye slaves come fire the hearth prepareH
Ha wilt thou sell this coin shall pay thee thisC
Fresh from the mint of mighty Titus LoX
Here lie the scales and not a weight we missC
So bring the light The delicate lamp what toilF
Shaped thy minutest grace quick pour the oilF
Yonder the fairy chest come maid beholdY
The bridegroom's gifts the armlets they are goldY
And paste out feigning jewels lead the brideR
Into the odorous bath lo unguents stillF
And still the crystal vase the arts for beauty fillF
-
But where the men of old perchance a prizeZ
More precious yet in yon papyrus liesZ
And see ev'n still the tokens of their toilF
The waxen tablets the recording styleF
The earth with faithful watch has hoarded allF
Still stand the mute penates in the hallF
Back to his haunts returns each ancient godA2
Why absent only from their ancient standL
The priests waves Hermes his Caducean rodA2
And the winged victory struggles from the handL
Kindle the flame behold the altar thereH
Long hath the god been worshipless to prayerH
