Friend the Great Ruler easily contentA
Needs not the laws it has laborious beenB
The task of small professors to inventA
A single wheel impels the whole machineC
Matter and spirit yea that simple lawD
Pervading nature which our Newton sawD
-
This taught the spheres slaves to one golden reinE
Their radiant labyrinths to weave aroundF
Creation's mighty hearts this made the chainE
Which into interwoven systems boundF
All spirits streaming to the spiritual sunG
As brooks that ever into ocean runG
-
Did not the same strong mainspring urge and guideH
Our hearts to meet in love's eternal bondI
Linked to thine arm O Raphael by thy sideH
Might I aspire to reach to souls beyondI
Our earth and bid the bright ambition goJ
To that perfection which the angels knowJ
-
Happy O happy I have found thee IK
Have out of millions found thee and embracedL
Thou out of millions mine Let earth and skyK
Return to darkness and the antique wasteL
To chaos shocked let warring atoms beM
Still shall each heart unto the other fleeM
-
Do I not find within thy radiant eyesN
Fairer reflections of all joys most fairO
In thee I marvel at myself the dyesN
Of lovely earth seem lovelier painted thereO
And in the bright looks of the friend is givenG
A heavenlier mirror even of the heavenG
-
Sadness casts off its load and gayly goesP
From the intolerant storm to rest awhileQ
In love's true heart sure haven of reposeP
Does not pain's veriest transports learn to smileQ
From that bright eloquence affection gaveR
To friendly looks there finds not pain a graveR
-
In all creation did I stand aloneS
Still to the rocks my dreams a soul should findT
Mine arms should wreathe themselves around the stoneS
My griefs should feel a listener in the windT
My joy its echo in the caves should beM
Fool if ye will Fool for sweet sympathyM
-
We are dead groups of matter when we hateU
But when we love we are as gods UntoV
The gentle fetters yearning through each stateU
And shade of being multiform and throughV
All countless spirits save of all the sireW
Moves breathes and blends the one divine desireW
-
Lo arm in arm through every upward gradeX
From the rude mongrel to the starry GreekY
Who the fine link between the mortal madeX
And heaven's last seraph everywhere we seekY
Union and bond till in one sea sublimeZ
Of love be merged all measure and all timeZ
-
Friendless ruled God His solitary skyK
He felt the want and therefore souls were madeX
The blessed mirrors of his bliss His eyeK
No equal in His loftiest works surveyedX
And from the source whence souls are quickened HeM
Called His companion forth ETERNITYM
