Name my Laura name the whirl compellingA
Bodies to unite in one blest wholeB
Name my Laura name the wondrous magicC
By which soul rejoins its kindred soulB
-
See it teaches yonder roving planetsD
Round the sun to fly in endless raceE
And as children play around their motherF
Checkered circles round the orb to traceE
-
Every rolling star by thirst tormentedG
Drinks with joy its bright and golden rainH
Drinks refreshment from its fiery chaliceI
As the limbs are nourished by the brainH
-
'Tis through Love that atom pairs with atomJ
In a harmony eternal sureK
And 'tis Love that links the spheres togetherF
Through her only systems can endureK
-
Were she but effaced from Nature's clockworkL
Into dust would fly the mighty worldM
O'er thy systems thou wouldst weep great NewtonN
When with giant force to chaos hurledM
-
Blot the goddess from the spirit orderF
It would sink in death and ne'er ariseO
Were love absent spring would glad us neverF
Were love absent none their God would prizeO
-
What is that which when my Laura kissesP
Dyes my cheek with flames of purple hueQ
Bids my bosom bound with swifter motionN
Like a fever wild my veins runs throughQ
-
Every nerve from out its barriers risesP
O'er its banks the blood begins to flowR
Body seeks to join itself to bodyS
Spirits kindle in one blissful glowR
-
Powerful as in the dead creationsT
That eternal impulses obeyU
O'er the web Arachne like of NatureF
Living Nature Love exerts her swayU
-
Laura see how joyousness embracesV
E'en the overflow of sorrows wildW
How e'en rigid desperation kindlesV
On the loving breast of Hope so mildW
-
Sisterly and blissful rapture softensV
Gloomy Melancholy's fearful nightX
And deliver'd of its golden childrenN
Lo the eye pours forth its radiance brightX
-
Does not awful Sympathy rule overF
E'en the realms that Evil calls its ownY
For 'tis Hell our crimes are ever wooingA
While they bear a grudge 'gainst Heaven aloneY
-
Shame Repentance pair Eumenides likeZ
Weave round sin their fearful serpent coilsV
While around the eagle wings of GreatnessV
Treach'rous danger winds its dreaded toilsV
-
Ruin oft with Pride is wont to trifleA2
Envy upon Fortune loves to clingA
On her brother Death with arms extendedB2
Lust his sister oft is wont to springA
-
On the wings of Love the future hastensV
In the arms of ages past to lieC2
And Saturnus as he onward speeds himD2
Long hath sought his bride EternityS
-
Soon Saturnus will his bride discoverF
So the mighty oracle hath saidE2
Blazing worlds will turn to marriage torchesV
When Eternity with Time shall wedE2
-
Then a fairer far more beauteous morningA
Laura on our love shall also shineF2
Long as their blest bridal night enduringA
So rejoice thee Laura Laura mineF2
