Discontent Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF BGBG FHFH IJKJ ABAB

The sun comes up in the eastA
And the sun goes down in the westB
And man to me is a heartless beastA
And the world has only a savage breastB
-
How thoughts rush over my soulC
As the waves walk over the seaD
Their forms flee soon and the sorrows rollC
In the deep distress that is over meD
-
How hopes arise in my heartE
As the roses bloom over the plainF
But time is tearing their sweets apartE
And they die in darkness and awful painF
-
Ambitions burn in my breastB
As the fires in a city rageG
But damp creeps over their fervid zestB
And they sink away into ashen ageG
-
If there was pleasure for painF
I could well be happy awhileH
And O my bosom would ne'er complainF
If my fortune gave me a single smileH
-
But here I am and the curse is onI
And my life is a waste of woeJ
And ere one river of tears is goneK
O another torrent begins to flowJ
-
Ah the sun comes up in the eastA
And the sun goes down in the westB
And man to me is a heartless beastA
And the world has only a savage breastB
