Two infants in their cradles lieA
Where lullabies of peaceB
In gentle strains of tender music dieA
And carols never ceaseB
-
Two urchins o'er the meadow landsC
Are bounding in their playsD
Where sweet enjoyment with angelic handsC
Winds gladness o'er the daysD
-
Two boys where golden fancies blessE
Repose in sunny beamsF
And muse away the hours of happinessG
On couches made of dreamsF
-
Two men upon a summer seaH
Are toiling brave and strongI
Where pleasures roll their elfin harmonyH
And labor ends in songI
-
Two gray haired sages silvered o'erJ
In life meet once againK
To name the wondrous happiness they boreL
Among their fellow menK
-
Two graves forever hide the twainM
Who found in all their yearsN
No secret shadows where unbroken painM
Held fountains full of tearsO
-
Two lives have passed from human reachP
And few have heard of themQ
But joy had not been better served if eachP
Had worn a diademQ
-
Ah bosoms here are strangely blestR
With perfect bliss that glowsS
And he above all others lives the bestR
Who has the fewest woesS
