If Love Were King Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBACCA ADDAEFA AGGAHHA AHHAIIA AIIAJJA

If Love were kingA
That sacred Love which knows not selfish pleasureB
But for its children spends its fondest treasureB
Sad hearts would singA
And all the hosts of misery and wrongC
Forget their anguish in the happy songC
That joy would bringA
-
If Love were kingA
Gaunt wickedness would hide his loathsome featuresD
And virtue would to all the world's sad creaturesD
Her treasures flingA
Till drooping souls would rise above their fateE
And find sweet flowers for all the desolateF
And sorrowingA
-
If Love were kingA
Before the scepter of his might should vanishG
Toil's curse and care and happiness should banishG
Want's awful stingA
While laughing plenty from sweet hands would throwH
Delightful raptures over all belowH
And gladness bringA
-
If Love were kingA
The nations would eternal sunshine borrowH
And conquer all the heavy clouds of sorrowH
And every thingA
That binds the race in groans and agonyI
Life's changing seasons would forever beI
Unvaried springA
-
If Love were kingA
O broken feet that wander worn and wearyI
Beneath the crags and awful mountains drearyI
With rapture clingA
Your anguished arms about him drink delightJ
Upon his perfect bosom soft and whiteJ
And comfortingA
