Ballade Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AB ABB CB D E AE FA AC GAD HI JI IC ID B K CK D

Bodies of comrade soldiers gleaming whiteA
Within the mill pool where you float and diveB
-
And lounge around part clothed or naked quiteA
Beautiful shining forms of men aliveB
O living lutes stringed with the senses fiveB
-
For Love's sweet fingers seeing Fate afarC
My very soul with Death for you must striveB
-
Because of you I loathe the name of WarD
-
But O you piteous corpses yellow blackE
-
Rotting unburied in the sunbeam's lightA
With teeth laid bare by yellow Hps curled backE
-
Most hideously whose tortured souls tookF
flightA
-
Leaving your limbs all mangled by the fightA
In attitudes of horror fouler farC
-
Than dreams which haunt a devil's brain atG
nightA
Because of you I loathe the name of WarD
-
Mothers and maids who loved you and the wivesH
Bereft of your sweet presences yea allI
-
Who knew you beautiful and those small livesJ
Made of that knowledge O and you who callI
-
-
For life but vainly now from that dark hallI
Where wait the Unborn and the loves which areC
-
In future generations to befallI
Because of you I loathe the name of WarD
-
l'envoiB
-
Prince Jesu hanging stark upon a treeK
-
Crucified as the malefactors areC
That man and man henceforth should brothers beK
-
Because of you I loathe the name of WarD
