Victoria To James Moorhouse, {76} Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A BCDCE FGHGE DIJIE KLMLE NOPOE

Bishop of Melbourne who left Melbourne for the Bishopric of Manchester th MarchA
-
He came a stranger and we gave him welcomeB
More as loved friend than rumour's honoured guestC
He spoke Were we then all so slack to listenD
To hail him as our wisest noblest bestC
Why did he leave usE
-
He toiled And we we under such a leaderF
Forgot all other creeds but that he taughtG
And proud of our clear answer to his summonsH
Forgot all other fights but that he foughtG
Why did he leave usE
-
He wearied 'Twas too great he said the burdenD
We saw it and we cried with anxious loveI
What does he Let him back down in the battleJ
Is not the general's place at rest aboveI
Why did he leave usE
-
He left us for a wider sphere of labourK
A tinsel seat within a House that shakesL
To herd with priests meal mouthed with lords and liarsM
That still would bind a nation's chain that breaksL
Why did he leave usE
-
Farewell then Are there any to reproach youN
In all this facile crowd that weeps and cheersO
Not one But ah you yet shall listen sadlyP
To an echo falling faint through the dead yearsO
Why did he leave usE
