After reading his 'Modern Painters'A
YES you do well to mock us youB
Who knew our bitter woeC
To jeer the false deny the trueB
In us blind struggling lowC
While on your pleasant place aloftD
With flowers and clouds and streamsA
At our black sweat and toil you scoffedD
That marred your idle dreamsA
'Oh freedom what was that to us 'E
You'd shout down to us thereF
'Except the freedom foul viciousA
From all of good and fairF
'Obedience faith truth chivalryG
To us were empty names 'E
The like to you might we replyH
Whose noisy life proclaimsA
Presumption want of human loveI
Impatience filthy breathJ
The snob in soul who looks aboveI
Trampling on what's beneathK
When did you strive in nobler partL
With love and gentlenessA
To help one soul to win one heartL
To joy and hope and peaceA
Go to vain Prophet without faithM
In God who maketh newB
With hankerings for this putrid deathJ
This flesh feast of the fewB
This social structure of red mudN
This edifice of slimeO
Whose bricks are bones whose mortar's bloodN
Whose pinnacle is CrimeO
Go to for we who strain our powerP
For light and warmth and scopeQ
For wives' for children's happier hourP
Can teach you faith and hopeQ
Hark to the shout of those who clearedR
The Missionary RidgeS
Look on those dead who never fearedR
The battle's bloody bridgeS
Watch the stern swarm at that last breachT
March up that came not thenceA
And learn Democracy can teachT
Divine obedienceA
Pass through that South at last brought lowC
Where loyal freemen liveU
And learn Democracy knows howV
To utterly forgiveW
Come then and take this free given breadX
Of us who've scarce enoughY
Hush your proud lips bow down your headX
And worship Human LoveI
