Proem Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBBCCDBDBCCEFEFCC

IN the black night along the mud deep roadsA
Amid the threatening boughs and ghastly streamsB
Hark sounds that gird the darknesses like goadsB
Murmurs and rumours and reverberant dreamsB
Trampling breaths movements and a little lightC
The marching of the Army of the NightC
The stricken men the mad brute beasts are keepingD
No more their places in the ditches or holesB
But rise and join us and the women weepingD
Beside the roadways rise like demon soulsB
Fill up the ranks What shimmers there so brightC
The bayonets of the Army of the NightC
Fill up the ranks We march in steadfast columnE
In wavering lines yet forming more and moreF
Men women children sombre silent solemnE
Rank follows rank like billows to the shoreF
Dawnwards we tramp towards the hills and lightC
On on and up the Army of the NightC
