IN the early summer morningA
I stand and watch them comeB
The Children to the School houseC
They chatter and laugh and humB
The little boys with satchelsC
Slung round them and the GirlsC
Each with hers swinging in her handD
I love their sunny curlsC
I love to see them playingA
Romping and shouting with gleeE
The boys and girls togetherF
Simple fearless freeE
I love to see them marchingA
In squads in file in lineG
Advancing and retreatingA
Tramping keeping timeH
Sometimes a little ladI
With a bright brave face I'll seeE
And a wistful yearning wonderF
Comes stealing over meE
For once I too had a DarlingA
I dreamed what he should doJ
And surely he'd have had I thoughtK
Just such a face as YouJ
And I I dreamed to see himL
Noble and brave and strongM
Loving the light the lovelyE
Hating the dark the wrongM
Loving the poor the PeopleN
Ready to smile and giveO
Blood and brain to their serviceC
For them to die or liveP
No matter O little DarlingsC
Little Boys you shall beE
My Citizens for faithful labourQ
My Soldiers for victoryE
Little Girls I charge youJ
Be noble sweethearts wivesC
Mothers comrades the sweetestR
Fountains of happy livesC
Farewell O little DarlingsC
Far away with strangers tooJ
He sleeps the little DarlingA
I dreamed to see like youJ
And I O little DarlingsC
I have many miles to goS
And where I too may stop and sleepT
And when I do not knowS
But I charge you to rememberF
The love the trust I hadI
That you'd be noble fearless freeE
And make your country gladI
That you should toil togetherF
Face whatever yet shall beE
My citizens for faithful labourQ
My soldiers for victoryE
I charge you to rememberF
I bless you with my handD
And I know the hour is comingA
When you shall understandD
When you shall understand tooJ
Why as I said farewellU
Although my lips were smilingA
The shining tears down fellU
