The Dead Kings Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCB ADED AFGF AHIH J KK BLM NOP Q ONAll the dead kings came to me | A |
At Rosnaree where I was dreaming | B |
A few stars glimmered through the morn | C |
And down the thorn the dews were streaming | B |
- | |
And every dead king had a story | A |
Of ancient glory sweetly told | D |
It was too early for the lark | E |
But the starry dark had tints of gold | D |
- | |
I listened to the sorrows three | A |
Of that Eire passed into song | F |
A cock crowed near a hazel croft | G |
And up aloft dim larks winged strong | F |
- | |
- | |
And I too told the kings a story | A |
Of later glory her fourth sorrow | H |
There was a sound like moving shields | I |
In high green fields and the lowland furrow | H |
- | |
And one said ' We who yet are kings | J |
Have heard these things lamenting inly ' | - |
Sweet music flowed from many a bill | K |
And on the hill the morn stood queenly | K |
- | |
And one said ' Over is the singing | B |
And bell bough ringing whence we come | L |
With heavy hearts we'll tread the shadows | M |
In honey meadows birds are dumb ' | - |
- | |
And one said ' Since the poets perished | N |
And all they cherished in the way | O |
Their thoughts unsung like petal showers | P |
Inflame the hours of blue and gray ' | - |
- | |
And one said ' A loud tramp of men | Q |
We'll hear again at Rosnaree ' | - |
A bomb burst near me where I lay | O |
I woke 'twas day in Picardy | N |
