Ballad Of Douglas Bridge Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABA CCDA EFAA AAGA HHIA JJKA LMNA OOPA QQRA

On Douglas Bridge I met a manA
Who lived adjacent to StrabaneA
Before the English hung him highB
For riding with O'HanlonA
-
The eyes of him were just as freshC
As when they burned within the fleshC
And his boot legs were wide apartD
From riding with O'HanlonA
-
God save you Sir I said with fearE
You seem to be a stranger hereF
Not I said he nor any manA
Who rides with Count O'HanlonA
-
I know each glen from North TyroneA
To Monaghan and I've been knownA
By every clan and parish sinceG
I rode with Count O'HanlonA
-
Before that time said he to meH
My fathers owned the land you seeH
But they are now among the moorsI
A riding with O'HanlonA
-
Before that time said he with prideJ
My fathers rode where now they rideJ
As Rapparees before the timeK
Of trouble and O'HanlonA
-
Good night to you and God be withL
The tellers of the tale and mythM
For they are of the spirit stuffN
That rides with Count O'HanlonA
-
Good night to you said I and GodO
Be with the chargers fairy shodO
That bear the Ulster heroes forthP
To ride with Count O'HanlonA
-
On Douglas Bridge we parted butQ
The Gap o' Dreams is never shutQ
To one whose saddled soul to nightR
Rides out with Count O'HanlonA
