N mai pietosa madre al caro figlioA

HER COUNSEL ALONE AFFORDS HIM RELIEFB

Ne'er did fond mother to her darling sonC
Or zealous spouse to her belov d mateD
Sage counsel give in perilous estateD
With such kind caution in such tender toneE
As gives that fair one who oft looking downF
On my hard exile from her heavenly seatG
With wonted kindness bends upon my fateD
Her brow as friend or parent would have doneC
Now chaste affection prompts her speech now fearH
Instructive speech that points what several waysI
To seek or shun while journeying here belowA
Then all the ills of life she counts and praysI
My soul ere long may quit this terrene sphereH
And by her words alone I'm soothed and freed from woeA

Ne'er to the son in whom her age is blestK
The anxious mother nor to her loved lordL
The wedded dame impending ill to wardL
With careful sighs so faithful counsel press'dK
As she who from her high eternal restK
Bending as though my exile she deploredL
With all her wonted tenderness restoredL
And softer pity on her brow impress'dK
Now with a mother's fears and now as oneC
Who loves with chaste affection in her speechM
She points what to pursue and what to shunC
Our years retracing of long various griefB
Wooing my soul at higher good to reachM
And while she speaks my bosom finds reliefB
