RETURNING SPRING BRINGS TO HIM ONLY INCREASE OF GRIEFB
-
-
Zephyr returns and in his jocund trainA
Brings verdure flowers and days serenely clearC
Brings Progne's twitter Philomel's lorn strainA
With every bloom that paints the vernal yearC
Cloudless the skies and smiling every plainA
With joyance flush'd Jove views his daughter dearC
Love's genial power pervades earth air and mainA
All beings join'd in fond accord appearC
But nought to me returns save sorrowing sighsD
Forced from my inmost heart by her who boreE
Those keys which govern'd it unto the skiesD
The blossom'd meads the choristers of airF
Sweet courteous damsels can delight no moreE
Each face looks savage and each prospect drearE

The spring returns with all her smiling trainA
The wanton Zephyrs breathe along the bowersH
The glistening dew drops hang on bending flowersH
And tender green light shadows o'er the plainA
And thou sweet Philomel renew'st thy strainA
Breathing thy wild notes to the midnight groveI
All nature feels the kindling fire of loveJ
The vital force of spring's returning reignA
But not to me returns the cheerful springK
O heart that know'st no period to thy griefB
Nor Nature's smiles to thee impart reliefB
Nor change of mind the varying seasons bringK
She she is gone All that e'er pleased beforeE
Adieu ye birds ye flowers ye fields that charm no moreE

Returning Zephyr the sweet season bringsM
With flowers and herbs his breathing train amongN
And Progne twitters Philomela singsM
Leading the many colour'd spring alongO
Serene the sky and fair the laughing fieldP
Jove views his daughter with complacent browE
Earth sea and air to Love's sweet influence yieldP
And creatures all his magic power avowE
But nought alas for me the season bringsM
Save heavier sighs from my sad bosom drawnA
By her who can from heaven unlock its springsM
And warbling birds and flower bespangled lawnA
And fairest acts of ladies fair and mildQ
A desert seem and its brute tenants wildQ

Zephyr returns and winter's rage restrainsR
With herbs with flowers his blooming progenyA
Now Progne prattles Philomel complainsR
And spring assumes her robe of various dyeS
The meadows smile heaven glows nor Jove disdainsR
To view his daughter with delighted eyeS
While Love through universal nature reignsR
And life is fill'd with amorous sympathyA
But grief not joy returns to me forlornA
And sighs which from my inmost heart proceedT
For her by whom to heaven its keys were borneA
The song of birds the flower enamell'd meadT
And graceful acts which most the fair adornA
A desert seem and beasts of savage preyE
