Sennuccio mio bench doglioso e soloA
-
ON THE DEATH OF HIS FRIEND SENNUCCIOB
-
-
O friend though left a wretched pilgrim hereC
By thee though left in solitude to roamD
Yet can I mourn that thou hast found thy homeD
On angel pinions borne in bright careerE
Now thou behold'st the ever turning sphereE
And stars that journey round the concave domeD
Now thou behold'st how short of truth we comeF
How blind our judgment and thine own how clearE
That thou art happy soothes my soul oppress'dG
O friend salute from me the laurell'd bandH
Guitton and Cino Dante and the restG
And tell my Laura friend that here I standH
Wasting in tears scarce of myself possess'dG
While her blest beauties all my thoughts commandH

Sennuccio mine I yet myself consoleJ
Though thou hast left me mournful and aloneK
For eagerly to heaven thy spirit has flownK
Free from the flesh which did so late enrolJ
Thence at one view commands it either poleJ
The planets and their wondrous courses knownK
And human sight how brief and doubtful shownK
Thus with thy bliss my sorrow I controlJ
One favour in the third of those bright spheresB
Guido and Dante Cino too saluteL
With Franceschin and all that tuneful trainM
And tell my lady how I live in tearsB
Savage and lonely as some forest bruteL
Her sweet face and fair works when memory brings againN
