THE PLAINTIVE SONG OF A BIRD RECALLS TO HIM HIS OWN KEENER SORROWB
-
-
Poor solitary bird that pour'st thy layC
Or haply mournest the sweet season goneD
As chilly night and winter hurry onE
And day light fades and summer flies awayC
If as the cares that swell thy little throatF
Thou knew'st alike the woes that wound my restG
Ah thou wouldst house thee in this kindred breastG
And mix with mine thy melancholy noteF
Yet little know I ours are kindred illsH
She still may live the object of thy songI
Not so for me stern death or Heaven willsH
But the sad season and less grateful hourJ
And of past joy and sorrow thoughts that throngI
Prompt my full heart this idle lay to pourK

DACREK
-
-
Sweet bird that singest on thy airy wayC
Or else bewailest pleasures that are pastL
What time the night draws nigh and wintry blastL
Leaving behind each merry month and dayC
Oh couldst thou as thine own my state surveyC
With the same gloom of misery o'ercastC
Unto my bosom thou mightst surely hasteC
And by partaking my sad griefs allayC
Yet would thy share of woe not equal mineM
Since the loved mate thou weep'st doth haply liveA
While death and heaven me of my fair depriveA
But hours less gay the season's drear declineM
With thoughts on many a sad and pleasant yearK
Tempt me to ask thy piteous presence hereK
