HE ENCOURAGES HIS SOUL TO LIFT ITSELF TO GOD AND TO ABANDON THE VANITIES OF EARTHB
-
-
What dost thou think'st thou wherefore bend thine eyeC
Back on the time that never shall returnD
The raging fire where once 'twas thine to burnD
Why with fresh fuel wretched soul supplyC
Those thrilling tones those glances of the skyC
Which one by one thy fond verse strove to adornE
Are fled and well thou knowest poor forlornE
To seek them here were bootless industryF
Then toil not bliss so fleeting to renewG
To chase a thought so fair so faithless ceaseH
Thou rather that unwavering good pursueG
Which guides to heaven since nought below can pleaseI
Fatal for us that beauty's torturing viewG
Living or dead alike which desolates our peaceH
