E questo 'l nido in che la mia FeniceA

THE SIGHT OF LAURA'S HOUSE REMINDS HIM OF HIS MISERYB
-
-
Is this the nest in which my phoenix firstC
Her plumage donn'd of purple and of goldD
Beneath her wings who knew my heart to holdD
For whom e'en yet its sighs and wishes burstC
Prime root in which my cherish'd ill had birthE
Where is the fair face whence that bright light cameF
Alive and glad which kept me in my flameF
Now bless'd in heaven as then alone on earthE
Wretched and lonely thou hast left me hereG
Fond lingering by the scenes with sorrows drown'dH
To thee which consecrate I still revereI
Watching the hills as dark night gathers roundH
Whence its last flight to heaven thy soul did takeJ
And where my day those bright eyes wont to makeJ

Is this the nest in which her wings of goldD
Of gold and purple plume my phoenix laidL
How flutter'd my fond heart beneath their shadeL
But now its sighs proclaim that dwelling coldD
Sweet source from which my bliss my bane have roll'dD
Where is that face in living light array'dL
That burn'd me yet my sole enjoyment madeL
Unparallel'd on earth the heavens now holdD
Thee bless'd but I am left wretched aloneM
Yet ever in my grief return to seeB
And honour this sweet place though thou art goneN
A black night veils the hills whence rising freeB
Thou took'st thy heavenward flight Ah when they shoneM
In morning radiance it was all from theeB
