L' ardente nodo ov' io fui d' ora in oraA
-
ON THE DEATH OF ANOTHER LADYB
-
-
That burning toil in which I once was caughtC
While twice ten years and one I counted o'erD
Death has unloosed like burden I ne'er boreE
That grief ne'er fatal proves I now am taughtF
But Love who to entangle me still soughtF
Spread in the treacherous grass his net once moreE
So fed the fire with fuel as beforeE
That my escape I hardly could have wroughtF
And but that my first woes experience gaveG
Snar d long since and kindled I had beenH
And all the more as I'm become less greenI
My freedom death again has come to saveG
And break my bond that flame now fades and failsJ
'Gainst which nor force nor intellect prevailsJ
