S' io credessi per morte essere scarcoA
-
HE PRAYS FOR DEATH BUT IN VAINB
-
-
Had I believed that Death could set me freeC
From the anxious amorous thoughts my peace that marD
With these my own hands which yet stainless areD
Life had I loosed long hateful grown to meC
Yet for I fear 'twould but a passage beC
From grief to grief from old to other warE
Hither the dark shades my escape that barD
I still remain nor hope relief to seeC
High time it surely is that he had spedF
The fatal arrow from his pitiless bowG
In others' blood so often bathed and redF
And I of Love and Death have pray'd it soH
He listens not but leaves me here half deadF
Nor cares to call me to himself belowH

Oh had I deem'd that Death had freed my soulJ
From Love's tormenting overwhelming thoughtK
To crush its aching burthen I had soughtK
My wearied life had hasten'd to its goalJ
My shivering bark yet fear'd another shoalJ
To find one tempest with another boughtL
Thus poised 'twixt earth and heaven I dwell as naughtK
Not daring to assume my life's controlJ
But sure 'tis time that Death's relentless bowG
Had wing'd that fatal arrow to my heartM
So often bathed in life's dark crimson tideN
But though I crave he would this boon bestowH
He to my cheek his impress doth impartM
And yet o'erlooks me in his fearful strideN
