Se l' onorata fronde che prescriveA

TO STRAMAZZO OF PERUGIA WHO INVITED HIM TO WRITE POETRYB

-
If the world honour'd leaf whose green defiesC
The wrath of Heaven when thunders mighty JoveA
Had not to me prohibited the crownD
Which wreathes of wont the gifted poet's browE
I were a friend of these your idols tooF
Whom our vile age so shamelessly ignoresG
But that sore insult keeps me now aloofA
From the first patron of the olive boughE
For Ethiop earth beneath its tropic sunH
Ne'er burn'd with such fierce heat as I with rageI
At losing thing so comely and belovedJ
Resort then to some calmer fuller fountJ
For of all moisture mine is drain'd and dryK
Save that which falleth from mine eyes in tearsL
