Ashamed sometimes thy beauties should remain | C |
As yet unsung sweet lady in my rhyme | D |
When first I saw thee I recall the time | D |
Pleasing as none shall ever please again | E |
But no fit polish can my verse attain | C |
Not mine is strength to try the task sublime | D |
My genius measuring its power to climb | D |
From such attempt doth prudently refrain | C |
Full oft I oped my lips to chant thy name | F |
Then in mid utterance the lay was lost | G |
But say what muse can dare so bold a flight | H |
Full oft I strove in measure to indite | H |
But ah the pen the hand the vein I boast | I |
At once were vanquish'd by the mighty theme | J |

Ashamed at times that I am silent yet | L |
Lady though your rare beauties prompt my rhyme | D |
When first I saw thee I recall the time | D |
Such as again no other can be met | L |
But with such burthen on my shoulders set | L |
My mind its frailty feeling cannot climb | D |
And shrinks alike from polish'd and sublime | D |
While my vain utterance frozen terrors let | L |
Often already have I sought to sing | M |
But midway in my breast the voice was stay'd | N |
For ah so high what praise may ever spring | M |
And oft have I the tender verse essay'd | N |
But still in vain pen hand and intellect | N |
In the first effort conquer'd are and check'd | N |
