Perch' io t' abbia guardato di menzognaA
-
IN HER PRESENCE HE CAN NEITHER SPEAK WEEP NOR SIGHB
-
-
Although from falsehood I did thee restrainA
With all my power and paid thee honour dueC
Ungrateful tongue yet never did accrueC
Honour from thee but shame and fierce disdainA
Most art thou cold when most I want the strainA
Thy aid should lend while I for pity sueC
And all thy utterance is imperfect tooC
When thou dost speak and as the dreamer's vainA
Ye too sad tears throughout each lingering nightD
Upon me wait when I alone would stayE
But needed by my peace you take your flightD
And all so prompt anguish and grief t' impartF
Ye sighs then slow and broken breathe your wayE
My looks alone truly reveal my heartF

-
With all my power lest falsehood should invadeH
I guarded thee and still thy honour soughtI
Ungrateful tongue who honour ne'er hast broughtI
But still my care with rage and shame repaidH
For though to me most requisite thine aidH
When mercy I would ask availeth noughtH
Still cold and mute and e'en to words if wroughtH
They seem as sounds in sleep by dreamers madeH
And ye sad tears o' nights when I would fainA
Be left alone my sure companions flowJ
But summon'd for my peace ye soon departH
Ye too mine anguish'd sighs so prompt to painA
Then breathe before her brokenly and slowJ
And my face only speaks my suffering heartH
