Io mi rivolgo indietro a ciascun passoA
-
ON QUITTING LAURAB
-
-
With weary frame which painfully I bearC
I look behind me at each onward paceA
And then take comfort from your native airC
Which following fans my melancholy faceA
The far way my frail life the cherish'd fairC
Whom thus I leave as then my thoughts retraceA
I fix my feet in silent pale despairC
And on the earth my tearful eyes abaseA
At times a doubt too rises on my woesA
How ever can this weak and wasted frameD
Live from life's spirit and one source afarE
Love's answer soon the truth forgotten showsA
This high pure privilege true lovers claimD
Who from mere human feelings franchised areE

I look behind each step I onward traceA
Scarce able to support my wearied frameD
Ah wretched me I pantingly exclaimD
And from her atmosphere new strength embraceA
I think on her I leave my heart's best graceA
My lengthen'd journey life's capricious flameD
I pause in withering fear with purpose tameD
Whilst down my cheek tears quick each other chaseA
My doubting heart thus questions in my griefG
Whence comes it that existence thou canst knowH
When from thy spirit thou dost dwell entireF
Love holy Love my heart then answers briefG
Such privilege I do on all bestowH
Who feed my flame with nought of earthly fireF
