Dell' empia Babilonia ond' fuggitaA
-
LEAVING ROME HE DESIRES ONLY PEACE WITH LAURA AND PROSPERITY TO COLONNAB
-
-
Yes out of impious Babylon I'm flownC
Whence flown all shame whence banish'd is all goodA
That nurse of error and of guilt th' abodeA
To lengthen out a life which else were goneD
There as Love prompts while wandering aloneC
I now a garland weave and now an odeA
With him I commune and in pensive moodA
Hope better times this only checks my moanC
Nor for the throng nor fortune do I careE
Nor for myself nor sublunary thingsF
No ardour outwardly or inly springsF
I ask two persons only let my fairE
For me a kind and tender heart maintainG
And be my friend secure in his high post againH
-
NOTTA
-
-
From impious Babylon where all shame is deadA
And every good is banish'd to far climesI
Nurse of rank errors centre of worst crimesI
Haply to lengthen life I too am fledA
Alone at last alone and here as ledA
At Love's sweet will I posies weave or rhymesI
Self parleying and still on better timesI
Wrapt in fond thoughts whence only hope is fedA
Cares for the world or fortune I have noneJ
Nor much for self nor any common themeK
Nor feel I in me nor without great heatA
Two friends alone I ask and that the oneJ
More merciful and meek to me may seemK
The other well as erst and firm of feetA
