Gloriosa Colonna in cui s' appoggiaA
-
TO STEFANO COLONNA THE ELDER INVITING HIM TO THE COUNTRYB
-
-
Glorious Colonna still the strength and stayC
Of our best hopes and the great Latin nameD
Whom power could never from the true right wayC
Seduce by flattery or by terror tameD
No palace theatres nor arches hereE
But in their stead the fir the beech and pineF
On the green sward with the fair mountain nearG
Paced to and fro by poet friend of thineF
Thus unto heaven the soul from earth is caughtH
While Philomel who sweetly to the shadeI
The livelong night her desolate lot complainsJ
Fills the soft heart with many an amorous thoughtK
Ah why is so rare good imperfect madeI
While severed from us still my lord remainsJ

Glorious Colonna thou the Latins' hopeM
The proud supporter of our lofty nameD
Thou hold'st thy path of virtue still the sameD
Amid the thunderings of Rome's Jove the PopeM
Not here do human structures interlopeM
The fir to rival or the pine tree's claimD
The soul may revel in poetic flameD
Upon yon mountain's green and gentle slopeM
And thus from earth to heaven the spirit soarsN
Whilst Philomel her tale of woe repeatsO
Amid the sympathising shades of nightP
Thus through man's breast love's current sweetly poursN
Yet still thine absence half the joy defeatsO
Alas my friend why dim such radiant lightP
