Hannibal conquer'd oft but never knewC
The fruits and gain of victory to getD
Wherefore dear lord be wise take care that yetD
A like misfortune happen not to youC
Still in their lair the cubs and she bear Q whoC
Rough pasturage and sour in May have metD
With mad rage gnash their teeth and talons whetD
And vengeance of past loss on us pursueC
While this new grief disheartens and appallsE
Replace not in its sheath your honour'd swordF
But boldly following where your fortune callsE
E'en to its goal be glory's path exploredF
Which fame and honour to the world may giveG
That e'en for centuries after death will liveH
