La bella donna che cotanto amaviA
-
TO HIS BROTHER GERARDO ON THE DEATH OF A LADY TO WHOM HE WAS ATTACHEDB
-
-
The beauteous lady thou didst love so wellC
Too soon hath from our regions wing'd her flightD
To find I ween a home 'mid realms of lightD
So much in virtue did she here excelC
Thy heart's twin key of joy and woe can dwellC
No more with her then re assume thy mightD
Pursue her by the path most swift and rightD
Nor let aught earthly stay thee by its spellC
Thus from thy heaviest burthen being freedE
Each other thou canst easier dispelC
And an unfreighted pilgrim seek thy skyF
Too well thou seest how much the soul hath needE
Ere yet it tempt the shadowy vale to quellC
Each earthly hope since all that lives must dieF

WOLLASTONG
-
-
The lovely lady who was long so dearH
To thee now suddenly is from us goneG
And for this hope is sure to heaven is flownG
So mild and angel like her life was hereI
Now from her thraldom since thy heart is clearH
Whose either key she living held aloneG
Follow where she the safe short way has shownG
Nor let aught earthly longer interfereH
Thus disencumber'd from the heavier weightJ
The lesser may aside be easier laidK
And the freed pilgrim win the crystal gateJ
So teaching us since all things that are madeK
Hasten to death how light must be his soulL
Who treads the perilous pass unscathed and wholeL
