Rhyme Scheme: A B ACCAACCADAADAA D EAAEEAAEFFGAAG A

Quando giunse a Simon l' alto concettoA
-
HE DESIRES ONLY THAT MEMMI HAD BEEN ABLE TO IMPART SPEECH TO HIS PORTRAIT OF LAURAB
-
-
When at my word the high thought fired his mindA
Within that master hand which placed the penC
Had but the painter in his fair work thenC
Language and intellect to beauty join'dA
Less 'neath its care my spirit since had pinedA
Which worthless held what still pleased other menC
And yet so mild she seems that my fond kenC
Of peace sees promise in that aspect kindA
When further communing I hold with herD
Benignantly she smiles as if she heardA
And well could answer to mine every wordA
But far o'er mine thy pride and pleasure wereD
Bright warm and young Pygmalion to have press'dA
Thine image long and oft while mine not once has blestA

-
When Simon at my wish the proud designE
Conceived which in his hand the pencil placedA
Had he while loveliness his picture gracedA
But added speech and mind to charms divineE
What sighs he then had spared this breast of mineE
That bliss had given to higher bliss distasteA
For when such meekness in her look was tracedA
'Twould seem she soon to kindness might inclineE
But urging converse with the portray'd fairF
Methinks she deigns attention to my prayerF
Though wanting to reply the power of voiceG
What praise thyself Pygmalion hast thou gain'dA
Forming that image whence thou hast obtain'dA
A thousand times what once obtain'd would me rejoiceG
