Po ben puo' tu portartene la scorzaA

TO THE RIVER PO ON QUITTING LAURAA
-
-
Thou Po to distant realms this frame mayst bearB
On thy all powerful thy impetuous tideC
But the free spirit that within doth bideC
Nor for thy might nor any might doth careB
Not varying here its course nor shifting thereB
Upon the favouring gale it joys to glideC
Plying its wings toward the laurel's prideC
In spite of sails or oars of sea or airB
Monarch of floods magnificent and strongD
That meet'st the sun as he leads on the dayE
But in the west dost quit a fairer lightF
Thy curv d course this body wafts alongD
My spirit on Love's pinions speeds its wayE
And to its darling home directs its flightF

-
Po thou upon thy strong and rapid tideC
This frame corporeal mayst onward bearB
But a free spirit is conceal d thereB
Which nor thy power nor any power can guideC
That spirit light on breeze auspicious buoy'dH
With course unvarying backward cleaves the airB
Nor wave nor wind nor sail nor oar its careB
And plies its wings and seeks the laurel's prideC
'Tis thine proud king of rivers eastward borneI
To meet the sun as he leads on the dayE
And from a brighter west 'tis thine to turnJ
Thy horn d flood these passive limbs obeyE
But uncontroll d to its sweet sojournJ
On Love's untiring plumes my spirit speeds its wayE
