Per mezzo i boschi inospiti e selvaggiA
-
EVER THINKING ON HER HE PASSES FEARLESS AND SAFE THROUGH THE FOREST OF ARDENNESB
-
-
Through woods inhospitable wild I roveC
Where arm d travellers bend their fearful wayD
Nor danger dread save from that sun of loveE
Bright sun which darts a soul enflaming rayD
Of her I sing all thoughtless as I strayD
Whose sweet idea strong as heaven's shall proveF
And oft methinks these pines these beeches moveF
Like nymphs 'mid which fond fancy sees her playD
I seem to hear her when the whispering galeG
Steals through some thick wove branch when sings a birdH
When purls the stream along yon verdant valeG
How grateful might this darksome wood appearI
Where horror reigns where scarce a sound is heardH
But ah 'tis far from all my heart holds dearI

ANONJ
-
-
Amid the wild wood's lone and difficult waysB
Where travel at great risk e'en men in armsB
I pass secure for only me alarmsB
That sun which darts of living love the raysB
Singing fond thoughts in simple lays to herK
Whom time and space so little hide from meL
E'en here her form nor hers alone I seeL
But maids and matrons in each beech and firK
Methinks I hear her when the bird's soft moanJ
The sighing leaves I hear or through the dellM
Where its bright lapse some murmuring rill pursuesB
Rarely of shadowing wood the silence loneJ
The solitary horror pleased so wellM
Except that of my sun too much I loseB
