Fera stella se 'l cielo ha forza in noiA

TO PINE FOR HER IS BETTER THAN TO ENJOY HAPPINESS WITH ANY OTHERB

Ill omen'd was that star's malignant gleamC
That ruled my hapless birth and dim the mornA
That darted on my infant eyes the beamC
And harsh the wail that told a man was bornA
And hard the sterile earth which first was wornA
Beneath my infant feet but harder farD
And harsher still the tyrant maid whose scornA
In league with savage Love inflamed the warE
Of all my passions Love himself more tameF
With pity soothes my ills while that cold heartG
Insensible to the devouring flameF
Which wastes my vitals triumphs in my smartG
One thought is comfort that her scorn to bearH
Excels e'er prosperous love with other earthly fairH

An evil star usher'd my natal mornA
If heaven have o'er us power as some have saidJ
Hard was the cradle where I lay when bornA
And hard the earth where first my young feet play'dK
Cruel the lady who with eyes of scornA
And fatal bow whose mark I still was madeK
Dealt me the wound O Love which since I mournA
Whose cure thou only with those arms canst aidK
But ah to thee my torments pleasure bringL
She too severer would have wished the blowI
A spear head thrust and not an arrow stingL
One comfort rests better to suffer soI
For her than others to enjoy and IM
Sworn on thy golden dart on this for death relyM
