Quando 'l sol bagna in mur l' aurato carroA
-
HIS NIGHTS ARE LIKE HIS DAYS PASSED IN TORMENTB
-
-
When in the sea sinks the sun's golden lightC
And on my mind and nature darkness liesD
With the pale moon faint stars and clouded skiesD
I pass a weary and a painful nightC
To her who hears me not I then rehearseE
My sad life's fruitless toils early and lateF
And with the world and with my gloomy fateF
With Love with Laura and myself converseE
Sleep is forbid me I have no reposeG
But sighs and groans instead till morn returnsH
And tears with which mine eyes a sad heart feedsI
Then comes the dawn the thick air clearer growsG
But not my soul the sun which in it burnsH
Alone can cure the grief his fierce warmth breedsI

When Phoebus lashes to the western mainK
His fiery steeds and shades the lurid airL
Grief shades my soul my night is spent in careL
Yon moon yon stars yon heaven begin my painK
Wretch that I am full oft I urge in vainK
To heedless beings all those pangs I bearL
Of the false world of an unpitying fairL
Of Love and fickle fortune I complainK
From eve's last glance till morning's earliest rayM
Sleep shuns my couch rest quits my tearful eyeN
And my rack'd breast heaves many a plaintive sighN
Then bright Aurora cheers the rising dayM
But cheers not me for to my sorrowing heartO
One sun alone can cheering light impartO
