Una candida cerva sopra l' erbaA

THE VISION OF THE FAWNB
-
-
Beneath a laurel two fair streams betweenC
At early sunrise of the opening yearD
A milk white fawn upon the meadow greenC
Of gold its either horn I saw appearD
So mild yet so majestic was its mienC
I left to follow all my labours hereE
As miners after treasure in the keenC
Desire of new forget the old to fearD
Let none impede so round its fair neck runF
The words in diamond and topaz writG
My lord to give me liberty sees fitG
And now the sun his noontide height had wonF
When I with weary though unsated viewH
Fell in the stream and so my vision flewH

MACGREGORI

A form I saw with secret awe nor ken I what it warnsJ
Pure as the snow a gentle doe it seem'd with silver hornsJ
Erect she stood close by a wood between two running streamsK
And brightly shone the morning sun upon that land of dreamsK
The pictured hind fancy design'd glowing with love and hopeL
Graceful she stepp'd but distant kept like the timid antelopeL
Playful yet coy with secret joy her image fill'd my soulM
And o'er the sense soft influence of sweet oblivion stoleM
Gold I beheld and emerald on the collar that she woreN
Words too but theirs were characters of legendary loreN
C sar's decree hath made me free and through his solemn chargeO
Untouch'd by men o'er hill and glen I wander here at largeO
The sun had now with radiant brow climb'd his meridian throneP
Yet still mine eye untiringly gazed on that lovely oneF
A voice was heard quick disappear'd my dream the spell was brokenF
Then came distress to the consciousness of life I had awokenF
