Se 'l dolce sguardo di costei m' ancideA
-
HE IS CONTINUALLY IN FEAR OF DISPLEASING HERB
-
-
If thus the dear glance of my lady slayC
On her sweet sprightly speech if dangers waitA
If o'er me Love usurp a power so greatA
Oft as she speaks or when her sun smiles playC
Alas what were it if she put awayC
Or for my fault or by my luckless fateA
Her eyes from pity and to death's full hateA
Which now she keeps aloof should then betrayC
Thus if at heart with terror I am coldA
When o'er her fair face doubtful shadows springD
The feeling has its source in sufferings oldA
Woman by nature is a fickle thingD
And female hearts time makes the proverb sureE
Can never long one state of love endureE

If the soft glance the speech both kind and wiseF
Of that beloved one can wound me soG
And if whene'er she lets her accents flowG
Or even smiles Love gains such victoriesH
Alas what should I do were those dear eyesF
Which now secure my life through weal and woeG
From fault of mine or evil fortune slowG
To shed on me their light in pity's guiseF
And if my trembling spirit groweth coldA
Whene'er I see change to her aspect springD
This fear is only born of trials oldA
Woman by nature is a fickle thingD
And hence I know her heart hath power to holdA
But a brief space Love's sweet imaginingD
