Amor che nel pensier mio vive e regnaA
-
THE COURAGE AND TIMIDITY OF LOVEB
-
-
The long Love that in my thought I harbourC
And in my heart doth keep his residenceD
Into my face press th with bold pretenceD
And there camp th displaying his bann rE
She that me learns to love and to suff rE
And wills that my trust and lust's negligenceD
Be rein'd by reason shame and reverenceD
With his hardiness takes displeasureC
Wherewith Love to the heart's forest he fleethF
Leaving his enterprise with pain and cryG
And there him hideth and not appear thF
What may I do when my master fear thF
But in the field with him to live and dieG
For good is the life ending faithfullyH

Love that liveth and reigneth in my thoughtJ
That built its seat within my captive breastK
Clad in the arms wherein with me he foughtJ
Oft in my face he doth his banner restK
She that me taught to love and suffer painA
My doubtful hope and eke my hot desireC
With shamefaced cloak to shadow and restrainA
Her smiling grace converteth straight to ireL
And coward love then to the heart apaceD
Taketh his flight whereas he lurks and plainsD
His purpose lost and dare not show his faceD
For my lord's guilt thus faultless bide I painsD
Yet from my lord shall not my foot removeM
Sweet is his death that takes his end by loveB

Love in my thought who ever lives and reignsD
And in my heart still holds the upper placeD
At times come forward boldly in my faceD
There plants his ensign and his post maintainsD
She who in love instructs us and its painsD
Would fain that reason shame respect should chaseD
Presumptuous hope and high desire abaseD
And at our daring scarce herself restrainsD
Love thereon to my heart retires dismay'dN
Abandons his attempt and weeps and fearsD
And hiding there no more my friend appearsD
What can the liege whose lord is thus afraidN
More than with him till life's last gasp to dwellO
For who well loving dies at least dies wellO
