THE CONTRADICTIONS OF LOVEB

-
If no love is O God what fele I soC
And if love is what thing and which is heD
If love be gode from whence cometh my woeC
If it be wicke a wonder thinketh meD
When every torment and adversiteA
That cometh of him may to me savory thinkeE
For aye more thurst I the more that I drinkeE
And if that at my owne lust I brenneF
From whence cometh my wailing and my pleinteA
If harme agre me whereto pleine I thenneF
I not nere why unwery that I feinteA
O quick deth O surel harme so quainteA
How may I see in me such quantiteA
But if that I consent that so it beD

If 'tis not love what is it feel I thenF
If 'tis how strange a thing sweet powers aboveB
If love be kind why does it fatal proveH
If cruel why so pleasing is the painF
If 'tis my will to love why weep why plainF
If not my will tears cannot love removeH
O living death O rapturous pang why loveB
If I consent not canst thou o'er me reignF
If I consent 'tis wrongfully I mournF
Thus on a stormy sea my bark is borneF
By adverse winds and with rough tempest tostA
Thus unenlightened lost in error's mazeI
My blind opinion ever dubious straysI
I'm froze by summer scorched by winter's frostA
